3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Lk 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Fulfilled Hearing Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe that you are the way, the truth, and the life. I love you above all things and trust in your love for me. Petition: Lord, Just as your Evangelist Luke sought to make you know through all by his inspired writings grant me the courage and the zeal to bring others to you by my word and action. Amen Gospel: Lk 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us,just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. 1. I Too Decided to Write Luke, the Evangelist, was a member of the primitive Church and heard many people speak of their first hand experiences with the Lord. As a baptized believer, he saw something in these testimonies that the whole world had to know, and he set about to crystallize these testimonies in his divinely inspired Gospel. God built on Lukes conviction and through his written testimony, people of every age would come to know and love Christ. God does great things with those who cooperate with the graces he gives them. 2. He Has Anointed Me. Christ does not speak on his own behalf but is sent by the Father to speak the things the Father wishes. The Spirit comes upon the soul granting that person the charism and the authority to act on Gods behalf.. As the Christian performs his tasks according to Gods will and with a spirit of supernatural charity, God grants that action a meritorious character. His actions are blessed and pleasing to the Father. 3. "This Scripture Has Been Fulfilled in Your Hearing." Christ reveals himself as our Friend, Redeemer and Lord through his interpretation of the scriptures. His word moves us toward a greater belief and hope in him. The mission of freeing the oppressed, is in its deepest sense, a liberation from the devil and sin. Christs spiritual message of redemption is understood as we become more supernatural in our outlook. These eyes of those who equated the fulfillment of the Scriptures that day in the synagogue with Christ as the Messiah were truly blessed. Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus Christ, often times I am spiritually insensitive to the reality of your presence in your Holy Writ. Thank you for your words. Continue to reveal something new of yourself to me through them. As I listen attentively to your word I ask your Holy Spirit to grant me a better understanding of the Fathers will concerning my life. Amen. Questionnaire: This optional questionnaire is intended to help you evaluate your life in light of the inspiriations God just gave you in these moments you spent with him in prayer. 1. How is my desire to know, love and serve Christ aided by my contact with his Holy Scriptures? 2. Is my knowledge of Holy Scripture limited to an intellectual knowledge, or do I also seek to let it penetrate my heart and move my will? 3. What concrete resolution can I make in order to spend more time with Christ in the scriptures? |
