What happens if after a man becomes a priest he learns he has a deeper love for women than he thought?

Tom asks:

I have told many people I want to be a priest, including my mother. When my mother heard this she questioned my for an hour on why I am wavering on the priesthood. What happens if a boy decides he wants to be a priest and then his parents send him to a high school seminary, even though he is not sure anymore? Or if a man becomes a priest and then learns he has a deeper love for women than he thought?

Dear Tom,

I find it hard to understand the question since it seems to be contradictory. (What happens if a boy decides he wants to be a priest and then his parents send him to a high school seminary, even though he is not sure anymore?) How can he be decided and not sure at the same time?

"If a man becomes a priest and learns he has a deeper love for women than he thought" confuses some issues. You don't love "women". Love is a personal thing. You love a person. A man who is a priest takes care in his dealings with women not to have a relationship that develops into human love. Perhaps you mean "attraction" rather than love. "Attraction" can by emotional, intellectual, physical, or instinctual. Here again a priest has to realize that he is human, and if he goes looking for those things he will find them and they will be too much for him to resist. So a priest who takes a vow of celibacy is very careful of his thoughts, words, what he looks at and reads, and the way he deals with people.

God bless.
