After I enter the Catholic Church, how should I follow a calling to the priesthood?

Aaron asks:

Dear Father,

I am not a Catholic, but God is clearly leading me to the Catholic church, and not just to the Catholic lay life, but to the priestly vocation. I am wondering what I am to do to enter into the priesthood. I am starting RCIA next week and will be speaking to a Priest friend of mine sometime then as well. I hope that you will be able to give me some clear guidance on what to do, especially since I do not have a firm standing in the church. I am, however, in good standing with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and have attended faithfully for years. I have not told my pastor, as I do not believe that he would accept the idea. If you can give me some guidance, I would greatly appreciate it. God Bless you and may He inspire your answers to all the questions that you are asked.

Dear Aaron,

You are taking the proper first step by doing RCIA, which will introduce you into the Catholic Faith. As you do it, make sure not to limit yourself to what you get in the classes but to undertake your own reading and study of the Catechism, and do some delving into websites such as Catholic Answers. Especially, go regularly to speak with Christ in the Eucharist to continue to grow in your knowledge and relationship with him; he will lead you. Place your journey in Mary's hands.

Keep in mind that you will not be able to go directly into formation for the priesthood right after your Profession of Faith and acceptance into the Catholic Church, since it is always prudent to live one or two years as a Catholic before taking such a step. However, that doesn't mean you need to put your vocation on the back burner: you can pray to Christ every day for the grace of being called; you can make your choices as regards your reading, prayer, study, social life, participation in parish activities in reference to your possible vocation, picking what will help it and avoiding what could hinder or endanger it. That would be truly prudent.

Your priest friend who knows you more than I will surely be able to give you more concrete advice.

God bless.
