What do I do when my parents don't want me to pursue a vocation?

Anthony asks:

Dear Father, I am a Specialist in the United States Army. I too have had long thoughts of priesthood since I was in high-school and my thoughts have only grew stronger over the years. I too want to become a priest. My parents have that view where they say they're proud, but they look like they don't mean it. They want me to pursue a life that will allow me to live with no problems involving debt. They are Catholics and strong supporters of the church. If that is the case, I do not understand why they would not want me to be a priest. I hope you can provide me with some good advice in making this decision. Thank you

Dear Anthony,

I dont think you need to dwell too much on the impression your parents are giving you (and it seems to be just that, an impression) of less than enthusiasm for your possible vocation. Sometimes parents act a little less enthusiastic or stand-offish because the don't want to pressure, or not because they are against a vocation as such but they just think you may not have one, and there may be other reasons too.

If you are comfortable with asking them about their reaction I would say to go ahead and do so, they may give you some helpful insights and information. If you prefer not to do so at this stage, simply start looking into the vocation, speak to the vocation director, and sooner or later I am sure you will get the opportunity to have a good chat with your parents.

God bless.
