How do I douse the fear of leaving my dear family?

John asks:

I've really got two questions. I know I'm only 13, but I have been thinking about going to the priesthood, when I'm old enough. My first question is how do I know if I'm really called to the priesthood? My second question is how do I douse the fear of leaving my dear family? Please contact me soon. Sincerely, John

Dear John,

One of the ways to know if you are really called to the priesthood is to speak with the One who calls, Christ himself. The best way and place to do this is of course at Mass and Communion first of all, and then in visiting Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. You should also let him speak to you through the Gospel and also very importantly by enlisting Marys help pray the Rosary, put yourself in her hands, and ask her to help you discover what He wants you to do.

It is also very good to speak to your parents about these thoughts that are coming to you, and have them pray for you as well, that you will discover and do whatever Christ wants. This leads us to your second question.

Here is something to keep in mind. When we follow Christ in the priesthood we not only leave our family but we also give up many other good things as well. This can make us afraid, both of the sacrifice itself and thinking maybe we will not be strong enough to make it. You dont overcome this fear by letting on you dont have it, but by asking God for his help. You dont stop loving your family in order to leave them to follow Christ, All you have to do is love them, but ask God for the strength to love him more and the souls he want you to save. You know that this love will be rewarded by Christ in the form of many graces for you and your family. They also love Christ, so they will continue to love you all the more because you have placed Christ at the center of your life and have not allowed them to be an obstacle.

Ill be praying for you.

God bless.
