Dear Fred,
It's great to hear of your interest in the priesthood. There are a number of courses in high school that can help you prepare for the priesthood. English and literature are very useful in order to keep developing your capacity to listen to the Word of God and share with others. History is also very helpful to know more about the way the human heart has acted throughout the ages. Spanish will be very helpful if you are a priest, because you will be able to reach more souls. If your school happens to offer philosophy (which is more typical of college level), medieval philosophy, especially St. Thomas Aquinas, is very useful, but also ancient philosophy of Aristotle and Plato. Of course if you are in a Catholic school, religion class is also very important.
All your studies and subject are helpful in their own way. When you study you are already preparing for the priesthood. Just the habit of responsibility and dedication that comes from study will help you be a better priest. See it as an important part of your preparation.
I would encourage you to read through the Bible several times, especially the New Testament, and to study the Catechism of the Catholic Church. There is also a question-and-answer version called the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is extremely helpful and more accessible than the full version.
I would also encourage you to take part in a youth group or something similar if you are not already involved. Having other friends who encourage us in our faith and who help us reach out to others is very important. You don't have to tell everyone that you are interested in the priesthood, though. That may put some unfair pressure on you. Just try to be the best Catholic you can be.
I would encourage you to have a priest that you talk with regularly about your spiritual life. He can be a great friend and guide in this important time of your life.
By the way, there are a few high schools that are specifically for young men who are considering the priesthood. Our community runs a couple of them. Let me know if you want any more information.
God bless, |
