I am 12 years old and I want to become a nun and people are telling me not to, what do I do?

Candi asks:

I want to be a nun when I grow up but some people are telling me not to be a nun and I don't know how to deal with it. Can you help me? The only people behind me are my mom, dad, brother and sister. I'm only 12 years old.

Dear Candi,

Even though it might seem to you that becoming a nun when you grow up is your idea, it is really something God puts in our mind and in our heart, and I am sure if I asked you why you want to be a nun you would answer because that is how you think you can please Jesus and love him more. Now, if you ask the people who are telling you not to be a nun why you shouldnt, they will probably give you reasons like, its a waste, you have to give up too much, you wont be able to go to parties, you wont have money, you wont be able to do whatever you want and they can't imagine anyone being happy in such a life. Mostly people will try to tell you not to follow a vocation because they only understand the material things in life, and they dont understand spiritual things.  So, on something as important and spiritual as your vocation it is best not to pay attention to what they say. At twelve years of age, and in a good Catholic family, it is much better to listen to your parents. And it is much better to go to Mass and Communion as often as you can, and listen to Jesus.  If I were you I would only talk about it with your parents and your brother and sister, and no-one else.

If God does want you to be a nun, he will open up the way for you as you grow up. For now, it is beautiful and it pleases him very much that you want to put him at the center of your life.

God bless.
