How do I discern which religious order to join?

David asks:

Fr. Anthony Bannon,

I am ready to retreat to the religious lifestyle, but I'm not sure which particular order. I have thought of Franciscan or Trappist Abbey in Oregon.

How do I discern which place or places to retreat to?

in Peace, David

Dear David,

Perhaps what you should do is visit both places you are interested in, preferably doing a retreat while you are there. (There are many Franciscan groups, and I presume you are thinking of one in particular). Try to experience somewhat the life in each monastery, making sure to have a long and detailed conversation about your faith and vocation journey with the priest in each place who is in charge of screening candidates.

God bless.
