www.vocation.com - What should I do if my parents want me to get a degree

	Teri asks: Im a 17 year-old woman, Im positive that God is calling me to consecrated life. Ive seen it with my spiritual director and she agrees with that also. Next year is my senior year in high school. I told my parents about my vocation, they kind of agree with it but I think they didnt really get it. They told me it was ok but as soon as I graduate from university. I believe I cant wait that long... its 5 years from now... What should I do? How can I explain that to them? Thanks for everything! This site has helped me lots!
	Dear Teri, You have a year to prepare yourself for your vocation and to help your parents understand your call. It seems to me that they may not know much about the consecrated life, so you should look for ways to introduce them to it, meet consecrated women, find out more about their life and see what they do. They also may be afraid that your choice is not a mature one, that you might start out but not follow through with it, and they don't want that to happen to you. Or they may think that university is "necessary", and they may not realize that in most forms of consecrated life you actually do get university degrees. So, continue to grow closer to Christ, give him your heart, and try to discover what your parents are thinking so as to help them find the answer to their reservations. Glad you like the site!
