Above all you should look for prudence in a spiritual director, and then knowledge (there are two types of knowledge of God that complement each other: theology and prayer). And then it must be a person you trust. It is not necessary for a spiritual director to be a priest, although it is very often the case. Finally, if you are toying with the idea of a specific vocation it would be wise for your spiritual director to have direct knowledge of the particular group you are attracted to. As a matter of fact, if at all possible I would recommend that your spiritual director be a member of that order or group, at least for the time of your discernment process.
