Can I be called to the priesthood if I have problems with anxiety and depression?

Mark asks:

Hi, I've been called for some time to the priesthood. Yet I also, like Michelle, have both anxiety problems and a history of depression, both treated with medication. I've been able to hold a successful college career and other responsibilities with these conditions, and feel that I can be an effective clergyman even with some "kinks in the chain-mail". Perhaps the greatest problem I might face is the seminary I choose. I am not called to the contemplative life. I would like to work in a parish. (Very stressful also!) Yet I would like to join one of the non-contemplative Tridentine rite orders (non-schismatic, of course.) Would they object to having a seminarian who is also being treated for depression and other disorders? or should I not even inquire about my vocation? I would guess that the Tridentine orders hold "Tridentine-era" views on mental illness. Thanks.

Dear Mark:

You will have to ask this question directly to whatever order or society you are thinking of - I cannot answer for them, so I encourage you to get in touch with them yourself. You mention 'Tridentine-era' views on mental health, and I am not sure what you mean, but let me say this: the groups that are approved by the Church as far as I know are in full communion with the Church, and accept all the Church teaches as regards the formation of priests, especially the document called 'Pastores Dabo Vobis' (I will give you shepherds) published just some years ago by the Holy Father after a Bishops' Synod on the formation of priests. I think if you speak to them you will find men who love Christ and who will help you see if he is calling you to their way of life. And that is really what you want to find out from them, isn't it?

God bless.
