Can I still be called to the priesthood if I am suffering from a major disease?

Anonymous asks:

Hi. I don't know if you can answer this question, but if you can, I would appreciate it. I was recently diagnosed with Crohn's disease. If you aren't aware of what Crohn's is, it is basically the inflammation and ulceration of the colon walls. There are different stages of Crohn's: active, moderately active, and passive. There is no cure for it, but it can usually be controlled by medication. I am in the active stage right now, but my doctor thinks that with medication and diet, we will be able to get it under control. I noticed in one of your last responses that you said health is a sign of whether you are called to the religious life. Would the fact that I have Crohn's mean that I would not be accepted into the religious life (and that I don't have a calling to it)? I know it is hard since you don't know the rules of specific communities, but it would help if you could give me a general sense of whether I should pursue a vocation to religious life. Thank you.

Dear Anonymous,

I think it is worth your while pursuing a vocation to religious life, by getting in touch with the particular communities you feel attracted to or are interested in. Generally speaking when a condition can be controlled by medication without serious side-effects, allowing you to live a 'normal' life (perhaps with some minor limitations), it is not an impediment to religious vocation. However, each group has its own special considerations and rules, having to do with the particular style of life lived in the community, the work they do, and the places they serve.

God bless.
