Dear Clare,
When you think you have a vocation and you visit a religious order, you have to make sure that you are asking yourself the right questions and looking for the right things when you are there. The right question is not, "do I like it?" with the corresponding examination of everything about the life looking for things I disagree with.
What you have to keep in mind is that you are looking to see if this is the place that God has made you for. So you are looking to see if you "fit". This is going to mean that you will feel at home in the place he is calling you to. But that is only part of the picture. I think there must also be a little fear as well, like he is asking too much of us, because he always calls us higher, out of our comfort zone.
So, my concrete advice is this: If you have looked at different orders but think you may not have done so in the proper way, go back and look at them again. Spend some time in each one, pray, and speak to one of the nuns about their life. If something "clicks" look deeper. Don't move on to somewhere else unless there is a substantial reason that this may not be the group Christ is calling you to.
If there is nothing wrong with the way you were looking into the different orders, then one by one look at some more. Don't jump all around the place, don't start comparing them; just go, visit, pray, talk to them, offer yourself to God, tell the Holy Spirit you trust him, and stop where you get that sense that this may be home.
God bless. |
