Is there any way to get my debt paid off, or do I just have to wait?

Tom asks:

I have just finished university and am working in my area of study. However, I now desire to be a priest. The problem is that, like many college students, I took out student loans. I thus have a small debt. By my calculations, it will take me a few years before I pay off the debt AND earn enough money to pursue a life in the priesthood. Is there any way around this, or must I simply wait?

Dear Tom,

Your problem is not unusual, and it's one of the reasons I tell those who are thinking about a vocation not to put it off until after college. Once you are in the position you are, with college debts to pay and feeling the call to be a priest, it is important that you DO NOT put off any action towards pursuing the priesthood until after you pay your debt. Start looking into it right away. You need to speak to the diocesan vocation director if you think you are called towards diocesan priesthood, or to the vocation director of the religious order you are interested in if you think you are called to religious life. The first reason is that these men will help you see if you really have the signs of a vocation, and so you will be able to answer that question and let it guide your actions between now and the seminary (for example, if it seems you have a vocation you will not invest time in dating and you will probably need to get involved in your local church a little more, you may also want to curtail other interests in order to get your debts paid off earlier...). The other reason is that you may get information that will help you with your debt. For instance, depending on what you studied a diocese or religious order may be willing to help you with your loan (as a diocesan priest in the future you will have a modest income that may allow you to take care of the loan then...) and it may be that a particular order or diocese will not require you to have money to pay for your formation... So if you look into it you may discover you can move earlier than you thought. God bless.
