Does it make sense to become a Brother when the Church so desperately needs priests?

Mike asks:

Hi Father, I have felt the call to the religious life and priesthood all my life, although the frequency changes all the time. Right now I feel the call to serve.  I teach at a school run by Brothers.  Does it make sense to become a Brother when the Church so desperately needs priests? Thanks! Mike.

Dear Mike,

It makes sense to become a Brother if that is what all the signs are pointing towards. It makes sense to become a priest if the signs are in that direction. And it makes sense to get married if that is what it seems God is asking of you, despite the lack of priests and brothers we all know exists.

You are open and willing to do what God wants, that is great. What needs adjustment is what you may be basing your judgment on as regards deciding what it is God wants you to do. For now it seems that the main factor is your feelings, which are alternating between the priesthood and brotherhood. You have already begun to break out of that trap in a way, because you are asking a question that goes beyond your feelings, (Does it make sense to become.), so you are on the right track, you are looking for reasons, and all you have to make sure it that your reasons are based upon your faith.

I think the very fact you are asking the question may be a light from God. You now need to take it a step further and ask yourself why it would or would not make sense. As you try to answer this you will find your soul inclining towards one side or another. It will be time then to look more closely into the side you are leaning towards, and to speak with a vocation director.

Dont forget, of course, to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to move your soul as you make your reflections.

God bless.
