Is epilepsy an obstacle to my vocation to the priesthood?

Harry asks:

Dear Father,

Is epilepsy an obstacle to my vocation to the priesthood? The condition is controlled by medication; I can drive and my life is normal, but even when medicated there is a possibility that something could happen. The thought of me (if I was a priest) blanking out, losing awareness, collapsing etc. when saying Mass is terrifying (and embarrassing!) Thank you.

Dear Harry,

I have heard that it depends on the type (grand mal, petit mal) and degree of your epilepsy.

If in your case there is a possibility that something can happen despite the medication, then your "terror" at what could possibly happen saying Mass is probably justified, and you would probably never be at peace in the priesthood.

God bless.
