How do I know that what I am doing is God's will, especially if my parents don't agree?

Michelle asks:

I have always wanted to be a lawyer that fights for children's rights. I believe children are not respected or treated right in some families. Luckily, God has blessed me and I am in a good environment. But, when I talk to my mom about my future she says it may not be God's will. I understand that right now as a sophomore I may not be certain, but I think that if I chose this path, my mother may not accept it. And, how do I know that what I am doing IS God's will?

Dear Michelle:

You and your Mom disagree on this because you are both coming from very different directions and perspectives. As regards children's rights, you are perhaps seeing it very simplistically, and under the influence of common 'politically correct' ideas you pick up in school and in the media. Your Mom is most probably basing herself on the common-sense question: who is a lawyer to decide what is good for my child? And also on the real abuses of 'crusaders' for children's rights that usurp parents' rights and obligations, the cases of parents who have been falsely accused of mistreatment of their children and had them taken away from them, etc... Right now there is time. Do the open thing, and study the other side of the picture to the one you are seeing. Do you own thinking, ask yourself are laws and lawyers going to solve the cause of the problem, or do those parents not need something else...

As to knowing what is God's will, you will know that if first of all what you are pursuing is in itself good, and secondly if it is the best you can do.

God bless.
