Should I choose the vocation that will carry on my mothers legacy and make them materialistically proud or follow the path less traveled and embrace the calling?

Joe asks:

My name is Joe and I am a High School student. My mother and father are divorced. My father has two other daughters, but my mother has only me. I feel that I may be called to priesthood; however, whenever I tell this to my mother, she grows angry because of the loss of grandchildren. In her presence, I abandoned the thought, but it remains strong in my heart. I have been interning with an orthopedic surgeon for a year and my parents have spent a great deal of money investing in a possible career in medicine, even though I am still in high school. My parents are very proud that I have the chance of succeeding in this wealthy field. I, on the other hand, am not as interested in money and materialistic things as they are. I wish only to use my talents to serve the Lord spiritually as a priest or through healing as a doctor. Should I choose the vocation that will carry on my mothers legacy and make them materialistically proud or follow the path less traveled and embrace the calling?

Dear Joe,

You received the gift of life from your parents, and they are very generous with you as regards the material things you need now and for your career later. You owe a lot to them.

But the gift of life you received through them came from God, plus the gift of supernatural life in Baptism, and all the qualities of body and spirit you have also come from him. He watches over you always. You owe a lot to him.

Now, before him and in his presence you need to think over your choice. Reflect on what matters most in life. What matters most to your parents is obvious, but perhaps what will do them the most good is something else. They are missing a dimension in their lives that maybe God wants you to give them. When the time comes in their life when they need to look beyond the material things, they will need you and your example.

Go often to Christ in the Eucharist (Mass and Communion as often as you can), and ask him directly what he wants you to do.

God bless, count on my prayers.
