It would be so much easier if God would open up the clouds and just tell me! | Anne asks:
Dear Father,
I live in Australia and I am currently studying psychology at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. I enrolled in psychology because I love to help people and I was told by a priest that it was a good choice because of the charisms I have. However, as I am getting closer to graduating, I am wondering where exactly I am going to go with psychology. For all my life, my faith has been at the centre of everything. When I was a child I had the greatest of devotions to Our Lady and as I have become older my prayer is more directed to Jesus. Looking back, I can see with such clarity how my faith has grown in this way, with Our Lady guiding and protecting me when I was a child and leading me to follow her Son whom I feel so close to now. Thus I have no doubt that God has been preparing me for something- I'm just not sure what. For the time being, I know that I am meant to be where I am- that is at uni, because I pray before making any of the big decisions in my life and thus I end up where God wants me to be. I guess that what I'm wondering about now is whether I am being called to the consecrated life. Along with psychology, I also have a great love for teaching as I love being with children and the youth. The thing is, I can see all these different paths and I'm not really sure which one is right. How will I know which one to take when the time comes? How did you know? It would be so much easier if God would open up the clouds and just tell me! But although I have told Him this several times, He doesn't seem to want to do this.
Thank you for your time and may God bless you for all your wonderful work.

Dear Anne,
It is not so much a question of knowing which path to take as being honestly open to whatever path it may be, of making sure that other attachments in your life take second place to God's plan. This means being willing to give up everything if he wants you to. When this is our disposition we are much more likely to hear him when he calls.
God doesn't usually tell us outright what he wants of us, it always comes indirectly, and as a suggestion not an obligation. You see, he is looking for a response given out of love, not a forced reply in which we have little or no choice. That is why it is so important to pray, and ask God to change our hearts, make them more generous.
God bless.
