Is there an examination of conscience 'for the scrupulous'?

Theresa asks:

Hello Father! I've been wanting to find a spiritual director, but am not really sure how to go about it. Readings about the saints and all kinds of spiritual people so often include 'a spiritual director' that has helped them on their journey. I've tried to get a hold of my parish priests, but it seems like they're too busy (that this might not be something they have time for). We've just kept playing phone tag, and I'm not too sure if I should look elsewhere. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated! Also, I was wondering if there is such a thing as an examination of conscience 'for the scrupulous'......because of the drastic fear of sin, honestly, most of the things mentioned (and even ideas) in the usual examinations, wouldn't even pertain to the severely scrupulous (despite the fact that they are just as sinful). Is there something that might aid this group of people in confession? I've read a lot on scrupulosity, but nothing specifically relating to confession/examination of conscience. Thank you!! --Theresa

Dear Theresa,

The most important point in order to overcome scruples is not so much to have a spiritual director, as to make the decision to follow what the spiritual director's prudent advice may be. Do not take a spiritual director if you are not going to trust him (her). There is also a certain danger in spiritual 'self-medication' - reading up a lot on your condition and then trying to guide yourself - although when you can't find a spiritual director there may be no other option, in which case you will have to trust that God will not abandon you if you do what you can, as you seem to be.

If you have a tendency towards scruples, continual examination of your conscience may not always be helpful. You should reflect and see if you have meditated enough on God's love. Read the Gospel over and over and listen to Christ's words about mercy, the widow's mite, the way he treats the poor, the sinners and the needy.... Then, if you discover many things in yourself that don't match up to what you know would please God perfectly (and if you do it doesn't necessarily mean that you are scrupulous) you need to turn your reaction into one of trust in his mercy, humility about your own possibilities, and a desire to try once more to be better - knowing that if you really love him it will seem that you can never do quite enough for him.

 I hope these ideas help.
