Will my flaws keep me from becoming a priest?

Sam asks:

Before you became a priest, do you ever feel assaulted, by low self-esteem? For example, did your flaws suddenly feel impossible to fix, therefore preventing you to become a priest?
Thank you and God bless.

Dear Sam,

It is important not to get caught up in ourselves, either through excessive optimism or excessive pessimism. The way to do this is to have a spiritual director, because then we are not fighting our battles on our own, trying to figure out for ourselves if we are being presumptuous or too timid.

Once you get a spiritual director, be completely open with him and follow his advice. Your spiritual director will be able to see more clearly than you what is fixable and what is not, and he will be able to give you concrete ways to work on what needs to and can be changed, while he will also help you to accept and work with what cannot be changed.

I hope this helps.

God bless.
