Are tattoos an obstacle to becoming a monk?

Matt asks:

I am 21 and I want to become a Benedictine monk, but I have three tattoos. All of non-offensive nature, but I know they are a sin listed in Leviticus. Can I still become a monk or any position in the church.

Dear Matt:

The Benedictines you are in touch with will be able to give you a more specific answer as regards their policies. In general, this would not be a hindrance. Most tattoos, in any case, are removable.

God bless.
