What is the difference between celibacy and chastity?

Sarah asks:

What does celibacy mean? I am a little confused on the meaning and what the difference is between celibacy and chasity.

Dear Sarah,

Chastity means to live purely, in other words, to use God's gift of being a woman or man in the way He meant us to. Every Christian is called to be chaste. Celibacy is a particular form of chastity in which God calls you to give yourself to him directly, rather than becoming a wife or husband.

God bless.
